29th August: Unionism in Canada and the role of the IWW

Julian Labonte, an organizer from Industrial Workers of the World in Quebec, is visiting and will join us to discuss “Unionism in Canada and the role of the IWW”. This talk will be a brief introduction to unionism in Canada in its current legalistic form and on the limitations that it brings to the activities of unions. Afterwards, we will jump in to the development of the IWW in Canada in recent years, more specifically on the Montreal branch and the tactics it has used after abandoning the tactic of following the legal, state sanctioned way. We will also take a brief look at some effective strategies when IWW organizers operate in a workplace that is already unionized.
